Acoustic Excellence on the Grand Harbour Waterfront
Founded in 1991, the Malta International Jazz Festival (MIJF) is recognized as one of Europe’s most atmospheric jazz festivals. Staged directly along the water's edge at Ta' Liesse beneath the illuminated ramparts of UNESCO-listed Valletta, the festival offers an unparalleled synthesis of world-class musicianship and historic maritime grandeur.
Festival Program Structure
- Ta' Liesse Main Stage: Over three consecutive nights, Grammy-winning jazz icons, innovative post-bop collectives, and Mediterranean rhythm masters perform directly against the reflections of the Grand Harbour.
- City Fringe Masterclasses & Free Concerts: In the days leading up to the main stage, free lunchtime and sunset concerts take place in Valletta’s City Gate, Republic Square, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
- Late-Night Jam Sessions: Spontaneous jam sessions run into the early hours at historic basement jazz clubs across Valletta's historic streets.
Take a traditional wooden dħajsa water taxi across the Grand Harbour from Vittoriosa to Ta' Liesse quay. Enjoy chilled Maltese white wine (such as indigenous Girgentina blends) paired with savory pastizzi as saxophone solos echo off 450-year-old bastion walls.
Organizers & Municipal Access
Organized by Festivals Malta under the Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government. The venue is easily reached on foot via the Barrakka Lift or from the Valletta Central Bus Terminus.
