About Birgufest
Birgufest is one of the Mediterranean's most enchanting autumn cultural gatherings. Held in the historic maritime city of Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa), the cradle of the Knights of St. John during the Great Siege of 1565, this three-day celebration turns back time.
The climax occurs during Birgu by Candlelight (Saturday evening), when all street and public electric lighting across the fortified peninsula is completely turned off. Tens of thousands of natural candles, oil torches, and lanterns illuminate every narrow limestone alley, medieval arched doorway, and baroque courtyard.
What Visitors Can Expect
- Acoustic Performances: Intimate violin, classical guitar, and Maltese folk guitar (Għana) groups perform in small courtyards and ancient church squares.
- Open Palazzos & Museums: Historic landmarks such as the Inquisitor's Palace, Fort St. Angelo, and the Malta Maritime Museum open late with special admission.
- Authentic Gastronomy: Streets are filled with stalls offering freshly baked pastizzi, imqaret (date-filled pastries), Maltese ftira, and local Gozo wine.
- Living History Reenactments: Costumed guards and medieval merchants parade through the city gates in authentic 16th-century regalia.
Birgu's fortified gates are closed to vehicular traffic during the festival. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use the traditional dħajsa water taxis or regular ferry service crossing from Valletta Grand Harbour across to the Birgu waterfront for a breathtaking water arrival.
