Northern Europe’s Premier Living History Festival
Every August during Week 32, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Visby on Sweden’s largest island, Gotland, steps back to the year 1361. Surrounded by its exceptionally preserved 3.4-kilometer limestone ring wall (Ringmuren), the city transforms into a vibrant Hanseatic trading metropolis filled with armored knights, minstrels, craftspeople, and storytellers.
What to Experience During Medieval Week
- The Grand Medieval Market: Spread beneath the historic towers of Strandgärdet, hundreds of blacksmiths, leatherworkers, herbalists, and weavers trade authentic period goods under canvas pavilions.
- Jousting & Chivalric Tournaments: Elite equestrian teams from across Europe compete in full plate armor in high-impact lance passes, archery trials, and swordsmanship duels.
- Acoustic Concerts in Ruined Churches: Visby’s haunting roofless Gothic cathedral ruins (such as St. Nicolai and St. Karin) host candlelit medieval choir performances, hurdy-gurdy concerts, and Nordic folk ballads.
- Living History Reenactments: Relive the pivotal historical landing and siege of Visby by Danish King Valdemar Atterdag in 1361 through meticulously researched theatrical field battles.
Enjoy slow-roasted Gotlandic lamb roasted over open wood spits, traditional mead, smoked Baltic herring, and Saffranspannkaka (sweet saffron rice cake topped with whipped cream and wild dewberry jam).
